Fallen Stars Execute Something Extraordinary
By Maddy Cristall
Fallen Stars are a BC based band that boldly stand at the intersection of hard rock and pop metal. They are LBBTQ+, female fronted and one hundred percent fierce. Fallen Stars are consistently releasing new material that showcases a different facet of their diverse talent. Each song is a fully realized body of work that celebrates something raw, real and authentic. Additionally, they often drop new and captivating music videos and live performances in wonderfully accessible ways.
Fallen Stars’ latest album “Execution” was just released and it is nothing shy of extraordinary. The album is intentionally well rounded and comprehensive. I had the pleasure of speaking with front-woman Rose and bassist Jade about the inner workings of the new record. Jade expresses “We left a lot of room for people to enjoy the music and being a part of the record, rather than here is a bunch of songs in a row.” This is certainly evident through the nature of this all encompassing album that feels more like an experience than a series of tracks. Rose shares in this record “we dive into current topics such as self harm, drug abuse, violence and a lot of heavy topics that mean a lot to me personally.”
Jade says “people are actually receiving the message and it’s really inspiring”. Rose shared that a fan from Belgium fell in love with single Trial by Fire and reached out, which is a huge part of why Fallen Stars make music in the first place.
Fallen Stars are a notably inclusive, friendly and paramount members of the Vancouver music Scene. Jade is the director of Support the Scene, runs Rock and Roll Pride and plays bass like a machine. Rose’s voice is a force to be reckoned with and is perfectly suited to the nature of this musical project. When asked about the accessibility of the metal and LGBTQ+ scene they both had great things to say. Jade expresses that after coming out as trans people “do the correct pronouns and treat me with respect even if I am just in a t-shirt in jeans and looking shaggy as heck.” Rose, who identifies as pansexual shares that Vancouver is a “beautiful music scene” and feels welcome in our local musical climate.
The band curated an excellent live stream on Friday, June 18th to mark the release of “Execution” and it was the closest I have felt to a live performance in almost two years. Their state of art standard of recording doesn’t go unnoticed. The band’s chemistry is palpable in the way they perform and you can feel the infectious passion towards the music. Fallen Stars do everything but sleep as they are somehow working on even more new material, videos and everything in between.
“Execution” is an emotionally rich and musically complex album that deserves your full attention. Fall into the depths of this new record generously shared by a tremendously talented band filled with great humans.
