H.A.V.E is Serving Hope in Vancouver's DTES

I recently had the pleasure of visiting one of Vancouver's H.A.V.E locations, which truly feels like a ray of sunshine in the heart of the Downtown Eastside. This cafe, located on Powell Street, is a warm and inviting place that offers training opportunities to individuals facing various barriers. The atmosphere is cozy, and accepting, and radiates positivity. The staff members come from diverse backgrounds but share a common path toward self-improvement.

H.A.V.E, which stands for Hope, Action, Values, and Ethics, is the cornerstone of a unique culinary job training program that has significantly impacted the lives of many individuals and families in Vancouver. This program empowers participants to achieve self-sufficiency through comprehensive on-the-job training, life skills development, and close collaboration with employers in the food service and hospitality industries.

Established as a registered charity and non-profit society in 2007, H.A.V.E has successfully trained over 1500 students, with more than 75% of them securing stable employment in the tourism and hospitality sector. If someone is seeking an opportunity to enhance their life, H.A.V.E provides free professional culinary training, assistance in job placement, and support in obtaining FOODSAFE certification. The program also offers uniforms, meals, and a welcoming environment at the full-service cafe, where all proceeds contribute directly to this impactful organization.

I had the opportunity to converse with three key individuals at the organization - Melissa, Myles, and Amber. Each of them brings a unique background, contributing to the inclusive and welcoming environment upon which the company is founded. The individuals behind H.A.V.E are a significant reminder that we are all human beings striving to do our best in a challenging society and economy. In a city that is becoming increasingly expensive and even unlivable, it is both refreshing and crucial to have establishments like this. They are dedicated to assisting, listening, and nourishing the community they wholeheartedly believe in.

Make sure to pay a visit to this exceptional café located at 374 Powell Street, not only to support an essential cause but also to meet the remarkable individuals who are committed to driving change.
